Destry A. Mitchell, 49, of Harrisburg, pled guilty and was sentenced last Friday (March 21, 2014) by Judge Walden Morris to 7 and a half years DOC, 3 years MSR (parole release) and costs. Mitchell pled guilty to Unlawful Possession of the Meth Precursor, a Class 2 felony. Class 2 felonies are normally punishable by a term of 3 to 7 years in DOC and a $25,000 fine. However, based on Mitchell’s previous criminal history an extended term sentence was imposed.

The Harrisburg Police Department and Illinois State Police Methamphetamine Response Team led the investigation of Mitchell. On April 22, 2013 HPD officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in which Mitchell was a passenger. During the course of the traffic stop, officers noticed a strong chemical odor emanating from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed pseudoephedrine, lithium batteries, liquid fire, drain cleaner and muriatic acid, all common ingredients used to manufacture meth.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jason A. Olson led the successful prosecution of Mitchell.
