SALINE CO., Ill. - Less than two years after running people out, ruining the land, causing hardship for the county on many levels and other generalized angst, Peabody Coal is reducing their presence in Cottage Grove, announcing the layoff of 75 miners this morning.
In a statement obtained from the coal company, they stated:
In response to market conditions and production requirements, Peabody Energy's Arclar Mine Complex (specifically the Wildcat Hills and Cottage Grove mines) announced a workforce reduction of approximately 75 positions effective immediately.
The Illinois mines, located in Saline and Gallatin counties, will continue to safely produce coal at volumes targeted to meet customer demand.
All impacted employees are being offered severance benefits and will be provided assistance in securing new employment.
The company regrets the negative impact this action will have on affected employees, their families and local communities.

Supporters of those in the area impacted by Cottage Grove have stated that they believe Peabody might even go as fra as to file bankruptcy.
"That'd be a good way to walk away from toxic impoundment structures and slurry ponds, leaving the community to clean up," one source said. "It is just a way to restructure finances and go back into operation under a new name."
